I’m Polish American. My parents were born in Poland and my brothers and I were born in America. Growing up we learned both English and Polish. I was able to speak to my grandparents, parents and many other people around me. It was great to know another language. When I went to high school, I started learning Spanish and being bilingual already, it helped me learn the language. Bilingualism is so important because it helps with learning in general. My own children are now learning Polish from my mother as well as me. I want my children to know the language in order to be successful in school as well as being able to communicate with their grandparents.
I created pages for them to color with Polish/English Christmas words and pictures. This way when they are going to be learning important words during Christmas, they will be able to connect the picture to the word. I print them out and have them color the words in both English and Polish. Then we practice saying the words and repeat them over and over again. These words help my children also understand our Polish traditions during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. My children are so excited to be able to have something to do that is bilingual for them.
