I always am searching through everything on Pinterest. I came across a wonderful idea of a hand printed table runner. I wish I came across it last year. When my son was born, I had all these ideas to do things with hand and foot prints. When he was born I was scared to put paint on his tiny little hands. Now that he is a year old it’s easier to do things like that.
When I saw the idea of a hand print table runner, I went out looking for one for Thankgiving. Each year I will use a different color paint and paint his hands and then place it on the table runner. I will also date it. I started it this year and it’s a nice way to see how his hands grow and he can see it as well when he gets older. I started on one side of the table runner and the other side will be for the next child (if we are able to have another child).
The things that I needed were a paint brush, acrylic paint and a table runner. This year my husband picked the color and he picked orange. I placed the arylic paint on my son’s hands. I did one at a time so that he will not get it all over one of us. Right away we cleaned his hands. It was quick and easy to do. It also dried right away. I dated the hand prints the next day with black arylic paint. Below is a photo of the first step. I hope this inspires you to make your own. It’s a special keepsake to have. Happy crafting.
I took my son’s first birthday photo shoot in the Poconos. It was great because I used nature a a prop. I, of course, used letter props. I used large letter o, n and e. I painted them white because I wanted to make it neutral. I also used a large letter m. I used cookie crisp to cover the large letter m. I ordered a onesie with a 1 and a cookie monster on it. I also found cute blue converse to go with it.
It was interesting taking my son’s first birthday photos. The reason was because he walks all over the place. It was hard to keep him in one stop. My mom helped to entertain him and get him to look at the camera a few times.
I hope this inspires you to take your own photos. It’s all about capturing the special moments in our children’s lives.
I created a monthly timeline of my son for his first birthday. I had pictures of each month from his 1st month to the 12th month. I chose one photo from each month that had showed his growth process. It’s amazing to see myself how much my son grew in a year. It was very hard for me to chose one photo because I had many favorites per month but I did it. I placed this timeline on our stairs to showcase him. Of course it was a Cookie Monster theme so the months were written on chocolate chip cookies (paper) and then I placed the photo onto either blue or yellow cardstock. I started creating this timeline over the summer which gave me about 3 months to complete. As a working mom, I had to make sure that I had everything ready for his birthday, so I started earlier. Below are the steps which I took to create the monthly timeline.
- crayons- brown and blue
- photos- one for each month plus a newborn
- clothes pins
- cardstock- tan, yellow and blue
- Cut out large circles on brown cardstock. Color chocolate chips with a brown crayon.
- Use blue crayon to write each month (newbown, 1 month, 2 months, etc…)
- Fold blue and yellow cardstock in half. Cut them. You should have 7 blue and 6 yellow.
- Tape the cookie month to the blue or yellow cardstock. Continue until you are finished.
- Add a photo for each month.
- Cut a ribbon long enough to fit all the months on it.
- Take each month and place a clothes pin to hold it in place.
I hope this helps you create your own monthly timeline to showcase your child on their first birthday.
In the rush of things, like working and just getting through the week, we forget to look at the small things around us. I took a walk with my son and noticed how beautiful the trees have been changing. Fall is a time when things change and we notice the beauty of it. The trees change. The leaves change color to a variety of colors. From red, yellow, orange, gold to brown.
As I was walking I kept thinking that, fall is a time when we are able to look at change as a positive. In fall, colors change, weather changes from warm to cold. These changes don’t have to be bad.
Many changes occurring.

As I reflect on my son’s first birthday, I worked really hard to create a Cookie Monster theme. It was very hard to find things to do because boys are hard to find themes for. As you know, I picked a Cookie Monster theme. I didn’t want to do a Mickey Mouse theme because I wanted to do something different from others. The next couple of blogs will be about my son’s first birthday party. I hope it inspires you to think outside of the box and create a theme for your child and work with what you have.
The first thing that I made was a first birthday photo frame. I used a mat from a photo frame. I painted it with a acrylic paint and then decorated it.
– photo frame
– acrylic paint- light brown and dark brown
– letter accents- blue and gold
- Paint the photo frame with light brown. Let it dry.
2. Paint circles using the dark brown paint. Let it dry
3. Use the letter accents both gold and blue. I spelled out Happy 1st birthday Michael.
4. I taped the letters on the frame.
5. Use the photo frame at the party.
I had a great time making this frame. I hope this inspires you to create your own. Make your child’s birthday party special.
This past Halloween was my son’s first Halloween. It was an amazing experience. He is walking everywhere he is allowed to go. I waited a whole year for him to celebrate Halloween. This year he had two different costumes. One costume was a shark and other one was a penguin. We had purchased these costumes a year ago and I couldn’t wait for him to wear them. I wanted to make this first Halloween special. I know that he will never remember this Halloween but I have many photos to show him in the future.
I enjoyed seeing my families reaction to how he was dressed. Everyone does the typical Halloween costume every newborn: pumpkin. I wanted to be different and I did and it worked. The Sunday before Halloween, we went to a Halloween parade in Astoria. We walked down Ditmars and went into Astoria Park. They had a few stations set up with balloon animals as well as cotton candy. It was a nice experience. Watching my son walking and enjoying his costume, made me feel great.
Halloween of course, I had to work but after, I went trick or treating with him around my old neighborhood. I have never seen so many people react to my son’s costume the way that everyone did. It was a great feeling to hear how everyone loved the costume. My son did walk with me by his side. I was the one saying trick or treat and thank you. He will not eat the candy but it was the experience for him that mattered. He did have a smile on his face when we walked into the stores and people smiled at him. I cannot wait to tell him about his first Halloween when he gets older.
